First press release 11/10/00 "Strip Tease To Save The Trees!" Loggers clearcutting an environmentally sensitive hillside near Westport, Ca. were temporarily stopped on Tuesday 10th and Thursday 12th by a bare-breasted poet with flowers in her hair and tears in her eyes. Chanting poetry which exhorted them to respect the "naked, sacred" body of the earth, Mendocino performance artist "La Tigresa" (aka Dona Nieto) performed excerpts from her one-woman show Who Says A Stripper Can't Save The World?" before the startled eyes and halted 'dozers of a Fortuna -based logging crew on Branscomb Road. |

Neighbors have been critical of the clearcutting of a steep hillside which they fear will wash down into nearby DeHaven Creek as a result of recently approved THP 293 MEN, initiated by Jonathan Cook, of McKinleyville, and Hawthorne Timber Co. Mr. Allen Gleason, 82, owned the fifty acre forest since 1961. He claims he was fraudulently led to believe that the buyer of his longtime homestead would never clearcut. "The real estate agent tried for years to get me to sell," Gleason said, "and told me this buyer (Cook) was a wealthy man who wanted the land for a nature retreat!" The land - and the plan - borders both sides of DeHaven Creek, and contain(ed) many residual old-growth (100+ yrs.) trees. Business practices of Hawthorne Timber, formerly Georgia-Pacific, are currently under scrutiny by the Mendocino Cty. D.A.'s office. |

Moreover, their clearcutting plans along the Skunk Train line (and elsewhere} are the subject of much citizen outrage. La Tigresa is part of the "Goddess Squadess", a nonviolent art attack consisting of "Nude Guerilla Poetry" and "Strip Tease To Save The Trees!" and other surprises to come. Thank you for support of this important movement, and your specific support for Earth Films work. Our work has already changed people's perception and increased awareness.
