LUNA has been saved! Thanks to a heroic non-stop occupation by Julia Butterfly and tireless effort made by her ground support team for over 2 years, the Stafford Giant redwood tree, aka LUNA, plus a 200ft. Buffer is now legally protected from the chainsaw. A deal with PacificLumber/Maxxam was hammered out thanks to the negotiating efforts of Julia and her support team, with help from John Goodman, (a locked-out Kaiser Aluminum Steelworker), Darryl Cherney of Earth First!, and Senator Diane Feinstien (who has close contacts with Charles Hurwitz)

The tree was named Luna by Earth First activists under the October full moon in 1997. This incredible action was started by rag-tag affinity group during their Fall '97 Headwaters Forest campaign and has been supported by 100's of dedicated activists and community members in the past 2 years.

Tree-sitting has long been a tactic used by activists on the north coast to help bring public attention to the destruction of these ancient redwood trees. No one has ever stayed up in a tree as long as Julia did, and no other tree-sit has received so much media attention on a worldwide level. Rarely do tree-sits end up actually saving the tree itself, but in this case, Julia's tenacity and strong spirit would not let her come down until she knew the tree was permanently protected .

Many tears of sadness and joy were shed.
